For the 2024 – 2025 academic year, the Fulbright Grants for a year of study at the level of a Master’s or PhD Program or to carry out independent research will be as stated below.
For the specific amounts for Maastricht University, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Radboud University Nijmegen, Delft University of Technology Faculty of Applied Science, Delft University of Technology Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and the American Friends of the Mauritshuis award, the amounts and/or tuition fees are different: please scroll down to the specific grant details per university/grant below the general information at the top this page. All non-university specific grants follow the general grant amounts.
- An amount of € 1.550 per month during nine months, starting in September and ending at the end of May. Current Fulbright grant recipients report that this amount is adequate to cover the costs of living. It is not adequate to cover tuition fees, please see below for more information.
- An allowance of € 1.000 for international travel costs.
- Reimbursement of the cost of the residence permit for the grant recipient. This is currently (Spring 2024) € 228 for both students and researchers, but if this is increased, the amount reimbursed will also be increased.
- Health benefits plan for illness and accidents. This health benefits plan from Seven Corners has maximum amounts and will be considered a secondary insurance in case you have and keep your own insurance while you are in The Netherlands, or when the Dutch host institutions obliges you to take out insurance.
- Coverage of cost of travel by public transportation to and from mandatory meetings (3-4 per year).
The Fulbright Commission does NOT cover:
- Allowances for partners or children;
- Additional financial support to cover research costs;
- Tuition fees (unless mentioned at the university-specific grants below). The Fulbright Commission will request host institutions to waive tuition fees for the non-university specific grants, but it is up to the host institutions to grant such requests. Tuition waivers or reductions are very rare.
- Cultural visits.
Maastricht University Scholarship
The grant consists of a monthly allowance of € 1.550 for 10 months, plus a full waiver of tuition fees. In addition, an international travel allowance of € 1.000 is included, and the cost of the residence permit will be reimbursed (or not charged) as well.
VU Amsterdam Scholarships
The grant will be paid in 12 monthly installments of € 1.550. International travel allowance of € 1.000 is included, and the cost of the residence permit (permit plus admin fee) will be reimbursed as well. Tuition fees are not waived, and differ per program. The Fulbright Vrije Universiteit Scholarship cannot be combined with the VUFP scholarship the VU Amsterdam offers. In case both are awarded, the grantee will have to chose which grant to accept. If awarded a Fulbright grant for the first year of a two-year program, you will automatically be eligible for a VUFP scholarship for the second year, provided you comply with the requirements of the VUFP (having received 100% of the credits in the first year). This grant is not meant for students with dual American/EU nationality who intend to make use of the lower tuition fees for EU citizens. The grant can only be used if the applicants will register at the VU as an American citizen, and will pay tuition fees as an American citizen. It is also not possible, when the applicant has a Dutch or EU spouse, to study on a spousal visa and pay the lower EU tuition fees.
Radboud University Nijmegen Scholarship
For one-year courses:
The grant will be paid in 11 monthly installments of € 1.550. The international travel allowance is € 1.000. The residence permit will be arranged by and paid for by Radboud University (€ 228). Tuition fees are not waived, and differ per program.
For two year courses:
The grant for the first year of study will be paid in 12 monthly installments of € 1.550. The international travel allowance is € 1.000. The cost of the residence permit (€ 228) will be covered as well. For the second year of study, a maximum of 11 months grant of € 1.550 is available. Tuition fees are not waived, and differ per program.
In principle, if it concerns a 2-year Master, the grant will be available for both years of study. However, the grant for the second year will be given on the condition that sufficient progress is made in the first year and that sufficient results have been achieved. To qualify for the grant during the second year, you need to have passed all courses in the first year. In June 2025, the Fulbright Commission and the grant coordinator at Radboud University will consult with each other on the study progress and will decide on awarding the grant for the second year, taking into account that not all exam results may be available yet. You will be informed by the end of June about the continuation of your grant. If awarded for the second year, the second grant period is not to exceed 11 monthly installments of € 1.550.
Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences
The grant consists of a monthly allowance of € 1.550 for 11 months of each academic year (courses are 2 years). Tuition fees are not waived. The international travel allowance is € 1.000 per year, and the costs of the residence permit (€ 228) will be reimbursed or paid for by Delft University of Technology. The grant is no longer available for new applications.
Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering
The grant consists of a monthly allowance of € 1.550 for 12 months of each academic year. Tuition fees are not waived. The international travel allowance is € 1.000 (once), and the costs of the residence permit (€ 228) will be reimbursed or paid for by Delft University of Technology.
Erasmus University Rotterdam Suzana Rodrigues Scholarship
The grant will be paid in 11 monthly installments of € 1.550. The international travel allowance is € 1.000. The residence permit will be arranged by and paid for by Erasmus University Rotterdam (approximately € 228). Tuition fees are not waived, and differ per program.
Fulbright/American Friends of the Mauritshuis Award
The grant will be paid in 9-12 monthly installments of € 1.550. International and national travel will be reimbursed to a maximum of € 3,000. The residence permit will be arranged for by the University of Amsterdam and waived or reimbursed after arrival (€ 228). Tuition fees are waived. There is also an extra allowance for cultural activities to a maximum of € 350 for cultural activities (museumcard, entry tickets to expositions).
Additional Support
On top of this support, the Fulbright Commission will also cover the costs of one or two selected grantees to attend international Fulbright conferences in Germany and Belgium. Grantees may also expect invitations to US Embassy receptions and other events as well as networking opportunities with Dutch Fulbright alumni.
Note
The Fulbright Commission will not be able to provide housing. If you are studying at or are affiliated with a Dutch university, your host institution will either provide housing or help you find housing. We would strongly suggest that you accept a housing offer by the host, as it is difficult to find affordable housing in the Netherlands. If you are unaffiliated, then it is best to arrive in advance of the start of your activities to look for affordable housing. Current and former US Fulbright grant recipients are willing to give advice in these matters. You will receive a list of names and contact data once your application has been approved.
