Research

The Fulbright Commission offers some fellowships for scholars conducting period research in the United States.

Fulbright scholarship requirements for researchers

  • You must stay in the US for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 months (longer stays are possible in some cases).
  • At the end of the fellowship period, you will return to the Netherlands.
  • After your research period, you cannot obtain a visa to the United States for immigration or work for two years. This does not exclude a visit as a tourist, conference visit or a short business visit.
  • It is not possible to apply for another visa with a Fulbright scholarship.
  • You have partial health insurance.U moet minimaal drie en maximaal 6 maanden in de VS verblijven (in sommige gevallen is een langer verblijf mogelijk).

 

Scholarship amount

  • The scholarship is up to $13,000 for senior scientists (with more than six years of relevant tenure-track experience)
  • The scholarship is up to $9,000 for junior scientists (with less than six years of relevant experience in employment)

 

Grant

Awards are made on the advice of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen. The board of the Fulbright Commission awards the fellowship.

Additional scholarship opportunity for study of the EU or EU/USA

Does your research concern the relationship between the European Union and the United States or the European Union itself? Do you meet all the requirements listed above? If so, you can apply for a Fulbright-Schuman fellowship.

The application process is through the Fulbright Commission in Brussels. You can find more information on the Fulbright-Schuman website.

Additional scholarship opportunity for research at the National Archives

Is your research related to archival sciences, such as conservation and restoration, cultural heritage, or heritage management? Do you meet all the requirements listed above? If so, you may be able to apply for a Fulbright-NARA Heritage Science Fellowship to conduct research at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in College Park, Maryland.

Fulbright Intercountry Program

Dutch universities, colleges, and government-funded scientific institutions can receive reimbursement for the accommodation costs of US scientists residing in another European country on a Fulbright grant. More information about the Fulbright Intercountry Program can be found here.
