Explore your options

Searching for a university that is right for you can be a fun and surprising process. There are nearly 4,700 institutions for higher education in the United States, so the possibilities are endless. Researching all your options can be time consuming, but it will be worth it in the end. Consider using this three-step program to help you on your way.

Tips:
  • Remember to keep an open mind during your search, and don’t just focus on the big names. Everybody is different, so not everybody will feel at home at the same universities. Maybe your perfect university is one you hadn’t even considered yet.

  • Institutions for higher education are called colleges or universities. Many people assume that colleges are of lesser quality than universities, but this is not the case. The only difference lies in their focus: colleges focus on undergraduate studies, while universities also offer graduate studies as well as a wider variety of applied sciences. Colleges tend to be smaller, and sometimes they are a part of a university.

  • EducationUSA offers a yearly pre-college academic enrichment summer program for international high school students between the age of 15 and 17 interested in studying abroad in the USA: EducationUSA Academy. You will live on an American university campus for three weeks while taking preparatory classes that will help you with your application, and visiting nearby college campuses. Several American universities also offer their own versions of this summer program, during which you research in a specific field.
